Efforts to construct a hotel on the corner of West Broadway and Dorchester Avenue in South Boston continue to progress after the project received the approval of the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday morning.

It was approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority in early-October.

Plans call for the construction of a 14-story building at 6 West Broadway to hold 156 boutique hotel rooms as well as ground floor cafe space, restaurant space, meeting rooms, roof-deck bar, pool/lounge area, and fitness center.

Joe Hanley, an attorney who represented the developer at Tuesday’s hearing, said the hotel would cater to business travelers and those visiting South Boston, with rooms priced between the high-$100s and low-$200s a night.

Proposed by Sun Condos LLC, an affiliate of the Boston-based Pappas Enterprises, the project also includes underground parking for 55-58 vehicles.

Hanley added that the developers were petitioning the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to use space under I-93 for additional parking.

At Tuesday’s hearing a slew of residents and local businesses turned out to support the project including representatives from the adjacent Cornerstone Realty Trust, Stephiâ’s on Broadway, Broadway Village Real Estate, and the West Broadway Neighborhood Association.

We’ve had extensive discussions with the proponent, Bill Gleason, president of the West Broadway Neighborhood Association, told board members Tuesday. We offer our full support; we think it will be fuel for the retail engine [in the area].

The Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, as well as representatives from the Electricians Local 103 and Carpenters Union also voiced their support for the project.

Representatives from the office of District City Councilor Bill Linehan and at-Large City Councilor Stephen Murphy also voiced their support for the project, but said they had concerns about the project’s height, density, and parking.

At Tuesday hearing a handful of residents also turned out to oppose the project, citing concerns about its height, parking, and the congestion it could add to the busy corner.

Two of the residents who testified against the project refused to give their names to Boston.com after the hearing.

A representative from the office of at-Large City Councilor Ayanna Pressley also voiced opposition to the project.

The project must now go through BRA design review.

933 East 2nd St.

A project that proposes constructing a four-story building for 21 condominium units and 33 parking spaces at 933 East 2nd St. was deferred by the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday morning.

George Morancy, an attorney who represented the developer, Sing Ming Chan, before the board Tuesday, said the project should be deferred to allow it to complete the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s Article 80 review process, which includes a community meeting component.

The project’s new hearing has been set for April 8 at 11:30 a.m.
